Heretic and Hexen are two classic first-person shooters with a fantasy theme from Raven Software. With Heretic released in 1994 using a modified version of the Doom Engine. It takes us to a fantasy world in the shoes of Corvus against the Serpent Rider sorcerers who have corrupted the 7 kingdoms of Parthoris.
Then came Hexen: Beyond Heretic, released in 1995. Continuing the mission started by Corvus with 3 new characters in the roles of Fighter, Cleric, and Mage. Using an even more enhanced version of the Doom Engine that enabled jumping. Two fantastic, beloved classics that are finally making a comeback thanks to the efforts of Nightdive Studios. Heretic + Hexen: The Unexpected Remaster from QuakeCon 2025
Just days after the launch of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, the team at Nightdive Studio had left us with a tease for QuakeCon. Shared on the Giant Bomb Plays EX on 25 June 2025, confirming that a surprise was coming. Many fans expected it to be a potential Remaster of the classic Quake games. But on 7 August 2025, the team surprisingly unveiled Heretic + Hexen at QuakeCon.
A remastered and enhanced version of the two great classic shooters by Raven Software. In collaboration with id Software and Bethesda. Bringing the definitive experience with gameplay improvements, features, and modern support. Available right from 7 August 2025 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, as well as on PC via Steam, GOG, and Xbox Game Pass.

What the enhanced versions of Heretic and Hexen offer
A fantastic surprise for the big fans of the famous fantasy shooter saga. With a remastered and enhanced version by Nightdive Studios. And an incredible collaboration with id Software to bring the definitive experience. This Remaster includes:
- Complete Package: Offering a bundle that contains Heretic, along with Hexen and the Deathkings of the Dark Citadel expansion. For a total of 117 campaign maps and 120 multiplayer maps.
- 2 New Campaigns: Also offering 2 new campaigns, Faith Renewed (Heretic) and Vestiges of Grandeur (Hexen). With direct participation between the teams of Nightdive Studio and id Software.
- Main Features: Original graphics adapted for resolutions up to 4K with support for 120 FPS. Also, cross-platform deathmatch for 16 players and 8 players locally. Support for community mods with a mod menu. Localization in 12 languages and native controller support.
Bringing not only a selectable soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, but also the Vault section with concept art and designs. Plus Save/Load functionality, improved UI and various fixes, and more. Finally, it includes the DOS versions of the 2 games + expansion at an incredible price.
In Conclusion
Certainly not what Quake fans expected from Nightdive Studio at QuakeCon. But this was by no means a disappointing surprise for fans; in fact, it finally delivered a definitive version of two great classics of the shooter genre.
