BioWare’s Dragon Age Trilogy Remaster Rejected by EA
EA turns down BioWare’s proposal for a Dragon Age trilogy remaster or Origins remake, leaving the classic RPG series without a modern update.
EA has declined BioWare’s proposals to revisit its classic fantasy RPG trilogy including a potential overhaul of Dragon Age: Origins or a remastered collection of the original series. The plan, once pitched by BioWare, ultimately failed to gain approval from its publisher.
Dragon Age Origins Remastered Rejected By EA
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah revealed that the studio had pitched EA on the idea of bringing back Dragon Age: Origins, either as a high-quality remake or as part of a remastered trilogy with Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition. The inspiration likely came from the commercial and critical success of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which proved that there’s still a strong market for updated versions of classic BioWare RPGs.
However, EA ultimately chose not to greenlight the project. Darrah even mentioned that EA has always not been keen on remasters. As for this particular pitch, several factors likely contributed to the decision including the old engine the game was built on and the biggest factor of all, funding.
As per Darrah, EA didn’t particularly shut it down. However, the publisher said that any funding needed for this project will have to be taken from the studio’s current budget which wasn’t possible at that time. Or maybe until now, hence, no plans.
It’s probably not very enticing too since Dragon Age Veilguard which started with a lot of hype and promise, ultimately failed to deliver with fans of the series feeling underwhelmed at the very least.
Time will tell if BioWare can finally secure funding for this but looking at how the industry is shifting, it’s probably not soon. And maybe EA is dodging a bullet with this one.
